Solar Photovoltaic
Solar photovoltaic (PV) harnesses the suns energy directly to generate electricity that can be used at the property or exported to the National Grid for which you can be paid 43.5 pence per kWh.

The new feed in tariff obligates utilitiy companies to pay consumers with renewable energy systems a set rate for each kWh the system produces. The tariff will be payable tax free and for 25 years. Payments will also be index-linked to future proof the payments.
As an example, a typical domestic solar electricity system, with a rated size of 2 kWp could earn around:
• £700 per year from the Generation Tariff
• £25 per year from the Export Tariff
• £110 per year reduction in current electricity bills.
This gives a total saving of around £835 per year.
This assumes 50% of the electricity generated is exported, this figure will vary. Figures quoted are from the Energy Saving Trust.
The power produced by PV contributes directly to the electrical demand for the building. This replaces electricity that would have otherwise been drawn from the National Grid. Any surplus electricity the system generates can be fed back into the National Grid for which a payment is made to the home owner under the Government's feed in tariff scheme (FITS).
Permissions - If you do not own your home you will need to obtain written permission from the owner. If your home is in a conservation area or is listed you will almost certainly require planning permission. Otherwise you are free to install solar panels without any written permissions.
Roof Orientation - unobstructed roofs facing anywhere from south east to south west are suitable. Shadows from other buildings, trees and chimney stacks will reduce the amount of energy the solar collector will generate.
Panels are typically pitched at 30 to 45 degrees from horizontal and can be integrated into the roof or on stand-alone A frames.
Space - The space required for solar panels depends on how much electricity you want to generate and the size of your budget.
