Solar thermal harnesses the suns energy directly and can provide up to 60% of a building's hot water needs. It is also the cheapest and most simple renewable technology to install.

Solar Thermal Hot Water

Using a solar panel to heat water is the most practical and cost effective ways of harnessing the sun's energy. The sun can deliver over 8000 times as much energy as we consume world wide. In the UK we receive between 900 and 1200 kWh of energy per square meter. This amount of solar energy is easily enough to provide 60% of a property's domestic hot water needs. Solar systems are a long established technology, working alongside existing heating systems and are particularly well suited to integration with heat pump systems.

Is My Home Suitable For Solar Thermal?

Permissions - If you do not own your home you will need to obtain written permission from the owner. If your home is in a conservation area or is listed, you will almost certainly require planning permission. Otherwise you are free to install solar panels without any written permissions.

Roof Orientation - unobstructed roofs facing anywhere from south east to south west are suitable. Shadows from other buildings, trees and chimney stacks will reduce the amount of heat the solar collector will generate.
Panels are typically pitched at 30 to 45 degrees from horizontal and can be integrated into the roof or on stand-alone A frames.

Space - Solar panels require 3-4m square of roof space and you will also require a solar ready hot water cylinder, which is slightly larger than a traditional hot water cylinder.

Cost - Solar collectors have only one moving part and are only differentiated by their efficiency and build quality. Given the significant life span of solar collectors, it would be false economy to install cheep solar collectors.
